The Food That Would Last Forever:
Understanding the Dangers of Food Irradiation
Dr. Gibbs' holistic practices were born out of an early concern and eventual investigation to expose food source irradiation.
Soon, more of the food on your market shelves may indeed "last forever" - courtesy of an FDA-approved process called food irradiation. Our federal government has, without great fanfare, authorized exposing our food to radioactive material culled from nuclear reactors. The process destroys insects, kills disease-causing bacteria, and extends shelf life. Isn't science wonderful?
Not in this case. While food irradiation may extend shelf life, it may also shorten human life. With each bite of irradiated food, we receive indirect exposure to ionizing radiation. The irradiation process creates new chemicals that can transform healthy foods into potential poisons. In fact, research has shown that consuming irradiated foods can cause cardiac and kidney damage, birth defects, chromosomal abnormalities, and even cancer.
The Food That Would Last Forever presents the facts on food irradiation that the government doesn't want you to know. It examines research documenting the dangers of eating irradiated foods, and exposes the appalling abuses of the irradiation industry. It evaluates the history of food irradiation and the motives of those who promote it. It is a story of money, politics, and the embalming of the American diet.
If you were to ask the average person on the street what he or she thinks of food irradiation, the most likely response would be a puzzled, "what's that?" Few Americans know what the next time they bite int a slide of bread, they may be eating irradiate wheat, or that when they pour spaghetti sauce on their pasta, they may be eating irradiated herbs and spices. They are unaware of the fact that part of the food supply is being exposed to X-rays, despite the fact that the technology has been at the center of a national and international health debate for more than three decades.
In a concrete vault with walls twenty feet thick, in a building peppered with signs warning "Danger-- Radiation Are," a door opens. Through the door, neatly boxed and stacked on a conveyer belt, come thousands of potatoes….
What happens when you eat it?
The preponderance of the evidence points toward serious danger in the wholesale adoption of food irradiation. Yet the FDA, so cautious in the matter of AIDS medications and contraceptives, has wholeheartedly embraced food irradiation as the wave of the future….
The FDA's press release was misleading. It led the press and many people in the forefront of the anti-food irradiation movement to believe that all irradiated foods would be labelled as such. As a result, many assumed that food irradiation was a dead issue.
Protect Yourself. One of the easiest ways to avoid many of the chemicals that contaminate our food supply is to avoid processed foods, particularly since processed foods are where irradiated foods most often end up. Foods that have been processed--frozen canned, or used in prepared food products-- have invariably lost nutrients while gaining one or more chemical additives.
